Overview

Coronary artery dissection is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome and sudden death.^[1] The coronary artery develops a tear, causing blood to flow between the layers which forces them apart. Coronary artery dissection can be either spontaneous, and in this case it is called spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) or secondary to other conditions. The majority of dissections occur secondary to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI); however, although rare, coronary artery dissections can occur spontaneously.^[2]
