Haplogroup C is believed to have arisen in Asia some 60,000 years before present.  It is a descendant of the [[Haplogroup M (mtDNA)|haplogroup M]].

Haplogroup C is found in Northeast Asia<ref name="tree">[http://www.ianlogan.co.uk/discussion/hap_C.htm Haplogroup C.]</ref> (including [[Siberia]]) and is also one of five haplogroups found in the [[indigenous peoples of the Americas]]<ref name="tree"/>, the others being [[Haplogroup A (mtDNA)|A]], [[Haplogroup B (mtDNA)|B]], [[Haplogroup D (mtDNA)|D]], and [[Haplogroup X (mtDNA)|X]].

In his popular book ''[[The Seven Daughters of Eve]]'', [[Bryan Sykes]] named the originator of this mtDNA haplogroup ''Chochmingwu''.
