Risk factors in the development of pertussis include the following:
- No or incomplete vaccination
- Exposure to infected individual (usually within 5 feet)
- Infants and children < 5 years of age
- Significant pulmonary co-morbidities (e.g. asthma)
- Immunocompromised status
