- Thyroiditis
- Congenital hypothyroidism
- Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland
- Radiation therapy of the thyroid
- Some medications, such as amiodarone, propylthiouracil, methimazole and Lithium.
- Age over 50 years
- Female
