Overview
Viral meningitis prevention depends mainly on the hygienic measures. There is no vaccinations that can protect against the disease itself. However, vaccines against some viruses like mumps and influenza are strongly recommended because getting infected with these viruses can lead to viral meningitis in the severe cases.[1]
Primary prevention
Primary prevention includes the following steps:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose.
- Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid bites from mosquitoes and other insects that carry diseases that can infect humans.
- Control mice and rats by:
- Trap rats and mice by using an appropriate snap trap.
- Clean up rodent food sources and nesting sites and take precautions when cleaning rodent-infected areas:
- Seal up rodent entry holes or gaps with steel wool, lath metal, or caulk.
Vaccines against specific viruses:
- Mumps: MMR vaccine
- Influenza: flu vaccine
