Overview
Upper GI endoscopy should be done to obtain a duodenal biopsy and the histological features suggestive of tropical sprue include intestinal villous blunting and intestinal lymphocytosis.
Other Diagnostic Studies
Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
- Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is normal in patients with tropical sprue.
- Biopsy of the duodenal mucosa will reveal the following features:[1]
- Incomplete villous blunting whereas complete villous blunting is seen in celiac disease
- Intra epithelial lymphocytosis
- Eosinophilic infilteration of the mucosa
