Overview
Pulmonary valve stenosis is a dynamic or fixed obstruction of the flow from the right ventricle of the heart to the pulmonary artery. Pulmonary valve stenosis can be caused by an isolated valvular obstruction, subvalvular or supravalvular obstruction. Narrowing of the pulmonary valve can be congenital. Other common causes include carcinoid syndrome, congenital rubella syndrome or tetralogy of Fallot.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
Common Causes
Valvular Pulmonic Stenosis
- Bicuspid pulmonic valves
- Carcinoid syndrome
- Congenital rubella syndrome
- Rheumatic heart disease
- Tetralogy of Fallot
Subvalvular Pulmonic Stenosis
Supravalvular Pulmonic Stenosis
- Blalock-Taussig shunt
- Congenital rubella syndrome
- Congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries
- Tetralogy of Fallot
