Overview
Duplex ultrasonograghy is often used for the evaluation of abdominal pain. However, in case of acute mesenteric ischemia its sensitivity is relatively reduced as compared to other radiological tests owing to its diagnostic limitation by the presence of air-filled distended bowel loops. Its primary clinical application is in the diagnosis of high grade arterial stenosis.
Mesenteric ischemia ultrasound
The use of duplex mesenteric ultrasonograghy is implemented commonly for the diagnosis of the following:[1][2][3]
- High grade superior mesenteric artery and celiac artery stenosis.
- Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia
- More distal emboli.[4]
- Recurrent stenosis following revascularization of mesenteric vasculature using bypass grafts.
- Screening for recurrent episode of mesenteric ischemia.
- Studying the physiology of intestinal circulation.
