Overview
Cystic fibrosis patients with a large pneumothorax should undergo chest tube insertion and even surgical pleurodesis in case of recurrent large pneumothorax. When medical treatment for pulmonary complications fails, lung transplantation is the only option.
Indications
- Surgery is usually not required in cases of cystic fibrosis. However, surgical management is indicated in the following conditions:[1][2]
- Large pneumothorax
- Failure of medical therapy leading to pulmonary complications
Surgery
- Cystic fibrosis patients with a large pneumothorax should be admitted to the hospital for chest tube insertion. The patient should undergo surgical pleurodesis in case of recurrent large pneumothorax.[1]
- When medical treatment for pulmonary complications fails, lung transplantation is the only option.[2]
