Overview
Lifestyle and genetic risk factors play an important role in the development of cirrhosis in patients. Chronic alcohol use, chronic hepatitis B and C infection and genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis are also significant risk factors for the development of cirrhosis.
Risk Factors
The risk factors of cirrhosis are as follows:
- Chronic alcohol abuse: regular moderate alcohol consumption is the most common cause of cirrhosis in the United States and other western countries[1]
- Chronic Hepatitis B and C viruses: most common cause of cirrhosis in Asian countries
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Chronic blockage of the bile duct
- Wilson's Disease
- hemochromatosis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Alpha l-antitrypsin deficiency
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
- Prolonged exposure to drugs and toxins
- Age above 50 years [2]
- Male gender [3]
- Features of metabolic syndrome in Non Alcoholic Steato Heaptitis(NASH): [4][5]
