Epidemiology and Demographics
- Most common breast symptom leading to office visit
- More common in premenopausal women
- Rarely a presenting symptom of cancer
- Study of women with known breast cancer: 7% presented with mastalgia alone.
- Women referred for mammogram because of mastalgia:
- 0.4% had breast cancer (same as controls)
- 87% had normal mammogram
- 9% had benign abnormalities
