Overview
Disequilibrium is the result of a dysfunction at one or more points in the complex system required for balance and ambulation. Disequilibrium may be caused by abnormalities in the visual, motor, sensory, cerebellar and vestibular systems.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
- Arrhythmia
- Asthma exacerbation
- Cerebellar hemorrhage
- Compartment syndrome
- Endophthalmitis
- Epilepsy
- Hypoglycemia
- Organophosphates
Common Causes
- Cerebellar disorders
- Gait abnormality
- Hypoglycemia
- Paralysis
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Vestibular disorders
- Visual impairment[1][2][3]
