History
A directed history should be obtained to ascertain:
- Constitutional symptoms like night sweats, fever, weight loss suggesting tuberculosis, Hodgkin's lymphoma, other malignancy
- Associated signs and symptoms for suggesting infections or malignancy
- Use of drugs causing lymphadenopathy
- Travel to endemic areas
- High risk behavior- high risk sexual behavior, I.V drug abuse
Symptoms
Lymphadenopathy per se can present as:
- Lump in the neck (e.g. in tumors, sarcoidosis).
- Red, tender skin over lymph node.
- Swollen, tender, or hard lymph nodes.
Most of the times patients present with symptoms of the causative factors of lymphadenopathy, like:
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Malaise
- Flu- like illness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Night sweats
- Weight loss and cachexia
