Overview
The cause of primary myelodysplastic syndrome has not been identified.[1] Common causes of secondary myelodysplastic syndrome include radiation, busulfan, nitrosourea, procarbazine, DNA topoisomerase inhibitors, acquired aplastic anemia, and Fanconi's anemia.[1]
Causes
Primary Myelodysplastic syndrome
Approximately 90% of MDS cases occur de novo with no identifiable cause.[1]
Secondary Myelodysplastic syndrome
Common causes of secondary myelodysplastic syndrome include:[1]
- Radiation
- Benzene
- Busulfan
- Nitrosourea
- Procarbazine
- DNA topoisomerase inhibitors
- Acquired aplastic anemia
- Fanconi's anemia
