Overview
Surgery
In the surgical setting it is recommended to avoid beta-blockers as they interfere with endogenous epinephrine and may precipitate anaphylaxis. It is also recommended to avoid alpha-blockers as well as anti-cholinergics. Care must be taken in the perioperative management of the patient with systemic mastocytosis. Certain anesthetic and analgesic medications can serve as a trigger of an acute exacerbation of mastocytosis [1]. Peri-operative administration of antihistamines such as benadryl and steroids such as Solumedrol may be necessary.
