Overview
Orbital cellulitis must be differentiated from preseptal cellulitis.
Differential Diagnosis
Orbital cellulitis may share common features or present similarly to other eye diseases with significantly varying management protocols. As such, the clinician must carefully consider the history, the presenting signs and symptoms, and cross reference the following differentials:
Infectious diseases
- Periorbital cellulitis
- Endophthalmitis
- Severe conjunctivitis
- Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus
- Posterior Scleritis
- Mucormycosis, Aspergilliosis of the globe
- M.Tuberculosis of the globe
Vascular
- Cavernous sinus thrombosis
- Atriovenous fistula
- Orbital varices
Autoimmune/Inflammatory
- Exophthalmos
- Wegeners granulomatosis
- Sarcoidosis granuloma
- Orbital pseudotumor
Structural/Trauma
- Retrobulbar hematoma
- Mucocele
- Dermoid cyst
Neoplastic
- Metastatic carcinoma
- Neurofibroma
- Schwannoma
- Glioma
- Retinoblastoma
- Rhabdomyosarcoma
- Neuroblastoma
- Lymphoma
- Leukemia
