Furuncle may be classified according to the International Classification of Diseases(ICD-10) into several subtypes.

Classification

According to the International Classification of Diseases(ICD-10), furuncle can be classified based on the anatomic location.

L02.02 Furuncle of face
L02.12 Furuncle of neck
L02.22 Furuncle of trunk
L02.32 Furuncle of buttock
L02.42 Furuncle of limb
L02.52 Furuncle hand
L02.62 Furuncle of foot
L02.82 Furuncle of other sites
L02.92 Furuncle, unspecified

Furuncle

• Tender abscess arising in hair follicle with extension into deep dermis
• Almost invariably due to S. aureus infection
• Occurs in areas subject to friction and perspiration (neck, face, buttocks)

Carbuncle

• Deeper, interconnecting abscesses arising in contiguous hair follicles
• Commonly occurs at nape of neck and on back, thighs
• A potential complication of furunculosis
