Overview:
Adenoiditis can be classified to the following types including acute adenoiditis, recurrent acute adenoiditis, and chronic/persistant adenoiditis.[1]
Classification
Acute adenoiditis
- Common adenoiditis symptoms:
- Nasal airway obstruction
- Snoring
- Sleep apnea
- Oral breathing
- Sore or dry throat from breathing through the mouth
- Differentiation between adenoiditis and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is hard as well.
- The child may be iller than the case of only having URTI.[2]
Recurrent acute adenoiditis
- Symptoms are the same as acute adenoiditis.
- Defined by presence of at least 4 or more than 4 episodes of acute adenoiditis within a 6 months period.
- Children who are suspected of immunodeficiency or other serious comorbidities (eg asthma) should be considered for prophylactic antibiotic. The dicision to start antibiotic therapy for these patients is contraversial due to antibioic resistance comorbidities.[3]
Chronic/persistent adenoiditis
- Persistent nasal discharge
- Malodorous breath smell
- Postnasal drip
- Chronic nasal congestion
- Purulent rhinorrhea
- Nasal obstruction
- Fever
- Otitis
- Headache due to sinusitis
- Sore throat
