Overview
Differentiating Mastoiditis from other Diseases
Mastoiditis must be differentiated from other diseases that cause postauricular inflammation or swelling
Disease | Findings |
---|---|
Mastoiditis | Posterior ear pain, local erythema and tenderness and edema on the mastoid bone, outward and upward displaced auricle, abnormal tympanic membrane |
Lymphadenopathy | Well defined and mobile mass, no effect on auricle and tympanic mass |
Periauricular inflammation or cellulitis | Tympanic membrane is normal. Mostly due to a skin minor trauma. |
Perichondritis of the auricle | Sd by swelling and erythema of the pin. Tsiditis, the postauricular crease is preserved, and the tympanic membrane appears normal. |
mumps | Parotid glands swelling, tympanic membrane is normal |
Mastoid tumors | Tympanic membrane is normal |
