Classification
Mastoiditis can be classified by disease duration into three types, acute, sub acute and chronic:
- Acute: infection less than one month. Mostly due to acute otitis media in children
- Sub acute: indolent infection more than one month, due to inadequate antibiotic therapy and persistent bacteria in middle ear.
- Chronic: mastoid cavities infection for months to years
