Overview
Bronchiolitis is a wide ranged disease that affects the small respiratory airways (bronchioles). Bronchiolitis should be classified in order to understand how it may occur and the clinical manifestation that could be observed. Bronchiolitis is classified based on the age and the different forms of the disease. According to age, bronchiolitis is classified into either adult or infants. Based on the different histological features, bronchiolitis can be classified into acute infectious bronchiolitis, bronchiolitis obliterans, proliferative bronchiolitis, diffuse panbronchiolitis and respiratory bronchiolitis.[1]Based on the Bronchiolitis Severity Score (BSS), bronchiolitis is classified into 4 classes.
Classification
Bronchiolitis can be classified based on:
Bronchiolitis | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Age | Histological | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Adult | Infantile | Constrictive brocnhiolitis | Proliferative bronchiolitis | Panbronchiolitis | Follicular bronchiolitis | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brochiolitis can be classified based on the Bronchiolitis Severity Score (BSS) into 4 classes as the following:[3]
Score | Respiratory Rate/minute | Wheezing | Retraction | General Condition |
---|---|---|---|---|
0 | <30 | None | None | Normal |
1 | 30–45 | Terminal expiration or only with stethoscope | Intercostal | |
2 | 46–60 | Entire expiration or audible on expiration without stethoscope | Tracheosternal | |
3 | >60 | Inspiration and expiration without stethoscope | Irritability, lethargy, poor feeding |
