Overview
The hallmark of esophageal stricture is dysphagia . A positive history of heartburn is suggestive of esophageal stricture. The most common symptoms of esophageal stricture include dysphagia, odynophagia, and heartburn. Less common symptoms of esophageal stricture include chronic cough and wheezing.
History and Symptoms
The hallmark of esophageal stricture is dysphagia. Various history findings and symptoms associated with esophageal stricture are discussed bellow.
History
Patients with esophageal stricture due to different causes may have a positive history of:[1][2][3][4][5][6]
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Pain in swallowing
- Heartburn
- Caustic ingestion
- Radiation therapy
- Esophageal cancer
- Allergy history in eosinophilic esophagitis
- Bullous skin eruptions in epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms of esophageal stricture include:[7][8][9]
- Dysphagia to solid and then liquid
- The duration of dysphagia is a most clinical finding for differentiating benign from malignant strictures.
- Long-standing, intermittent, nonprogressive dysphagia in benign strictures
- Rapidly progressive dysphagia and weight loss in malignant stricture
- The duration of dysphagia is a most clinical finding for differentiating benign from malignant strictures.
- Odynophagia
- Weight loss
- Cough, especially at night
- Heartburn
- Chest pain
- Acid taste in the mouth
Less Common Symptoms
Less common symptoms of esophageal stricture can be related to aspiration pneumonia and include[7]
