Gastric cancer historical perspective
- Around 1800, Dr. John Jones was the first to perform a gastric resection, influenced by the death of a friend due to a carcinoma of the pylorus.
- In 1874, Professor Billroth instructed his assistants Gussenbauer und Winiwarter to develop the anastomosis of both lumina with a Lembert suture line.
- Between 1817 and 1873, Gussenbauer and Winiwarter studied the pathology of carcinoma of the pylorus. Results proved that the tumor could be cured by resection.
