Overview
Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Findings on an ultrasound diagnostic of inguinal hernia include herniated bowel contents, herniated fat and the normal intra-abdominal contents move inferior with the Valsalva maneuver.

- Herniated bowel contents may show peristalsis
- Herniated fat appears hyperechoic
- Reducibility and bowel viability is identified by peristalsis or mucosal blood flow
- The normal intra-abdominal contents move inferior with the Valsalva maneuver
