Overview
Common symptoms of jaundice that the patient will notice, is yellowing of the skin, nausea, and vomiting. Specific symptoms will depend on the underlying factor that caused jaundice to occur.
History and Symptoms
Jaundice typically appears in a 'top to bottom' progression (starting with the face, progressing toward the feet), and resolves in a 'bottom to top' manner.
The caregiver should ask questions regarding
- Alcohol/hepatotoxic medication use
Various Symptoms
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease[3]
Usually, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease presents with no or few symptoms and sighs but when it does it shows the following:
- Hepatomegaly
- Fatigue
- Ascites
- Gynecomastia ( due to decreased estrogen clearance by liver damage )
- Right upper quadrant abdominal pain
- Jaundice
- Splenomegaly
- Most of the time its an incidental diagnosis or the disease may present first with cirrhosis and/or the complication of portal hypertension
