Effective measures for the primary prevention of neonatal jaundice include breastfeeding of the infants and avoidance of dextrose water supplementation of the breastfed infants.
Primary Prevention
- Effective measures recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for the primary prevention of neonatal jaundice include the following:[1]
- Breastfeeding of the infants 8-12 times per day, inadequate breastfeeding leads to jaundice development
- Avoidance of dextrose water supplementation of the breasfed infants
