Overview
Aspiration pneumonia is caused by inhalation of secretions, gastric contents or any foreign material which reaches lung paraenchyma and damages lung tissueby inflammation
Causes
Life-threatening Causes
- Life-threatening causes of aspiration pneumonia include stroke, unconsciousness, and brain-stem palsy.
Common Causes
Aspiration pneumonia may be caused by breathing in:
- food
- saliva
- liquids
- vomit
Less Common Causes
Less common causes of aspiration pneumonia include inhalation of:
- meconium
- foreign body
- oil
Genetic Causes
- There are no genetic causes of aspiration pneumonia but patients with paralysis of LCN lower cranial nerves(paired 9th (glossopharyngeal), 10th (vagal), 11th(accessory) and 12th (hypoglossal) ) due to syndromes are prone to aspiration syndromes. They may include:
- Cerebral parlay
- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),
- spinal muscular atrophy,
- bulbospinal muscular atrophy (BSMA),
- unclassified MNDs (Sandhoff disease, triple-A-syndrome, Brown-Vialetto-Van Lare-syndrome)
- hereditary neuropathy
