Overview
The hallmark of lymphadenopathy is swollen lymph node. A positive history of lump in the neck, red, tender skin over lymph node and swollen, tender, or hard lymph nodes is suggestive of lymphadenopathy. The most common symptoms of lymphadenopathy include a lump in neck or affected part and constitutional symptoms like fatigue, fever, malaise, flu- like illness, nausea and vomiting, night sweats, weight loss and cachexia.
History and Symptoms
History
A directed history should be obtained to ascertain:
- Constitutional symptoms like night sweats, fever, weight loss suggesting tuberculosis, Hodgkin's lymphoma, other malignancy
- Associated signs and symptoms for suggesting infections or malignancy
- Use of drugs causing lymphadenopathy
- Travel to endemic areas
- High risk behavior- high risk sexual behavior, I.V drug abuse
Patients with lymphadenopathy may have a positive history of:
- Lump in the neck (e.g. in tumors, sarcoidosis).
- Red, tender skin over lymph node.
- Swollen, tender, or hard lymph nodes.
