Overview
Brain MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of Friedreich's ataxia. Findings on MRI suggestive of Friedreich's ataxia include: Cerebellar hemisphere atrophy in approximately 50% of patients, atrophy of the vermis in approximately 67% of patints, atrophy of the medulla and supratentorial cerebral atrophy in approximately 17% of patints.
MRI
Brain MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of Friedreich's ataxia. Findings on MRI suggestive of Friedreich's ataxia include:[1]
- Cerebellar hemisphere atrophy in approximately 50% of patients
- Atrophy of the vermis in approximately 67% of patints
- Atrophy of the medulla
- Supratentorial cerebral atrophy in approximately 17% of patints
