Overview
A CT scan is not commonly used for the diagnosis of cardiac tamponade as it is effectively diagnosed based on clinical features and echocardiography.
CT scan
- Ct scan provides pivotal information about the underlying cause of pericardial effusion based on attenuation measurements of collection.[1][2][3][4]
- Superior vena cava enlargement
- Diameter similar or greater than adjacent thoracic aorta.
- Inferior vena cava enlargement
- Diameter greater than twice that of the adjacent abdominal aorta
- Hepatic and renal vein enlargment
- Periportal edema
- Reflux of contrast material
- Compression of coronary sinus
- Angulation of interventricular septum
- Pericardial thickening
- Collapse of the right atrium
- Aortic blood contrast level
