Overview

Puerperal psychiatric illnesses may be classified according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-V) into 3 types:

• postpartum blues,
• postpartum depression, and
• postpartum psychosis.

During the postpartum period there is also increased susceptibility to anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder.
