Overview
Angiodysplasia was first reported in 1839 by Philips as a vascular lesion causing bleeding from large intestine. Heyde discovered the association between aortic stenosis and angiodysplasia in 1958. The term angiodysplasia was coined by Galbadini in 1974. In 1960, Margulis and colleagues identified a vascular malformation in the cecum of a 69-year-old woman who presented with massive bleeding
Historical Perspective
Discovery
- Angiodysplasia was first reported in 1839 by Philips as a vascular lesion causing bleeding from large intestine.
- Dr. E.C. Heyde discovered the association between aortic stenosis and angiodysplasia in 1958.[1]
- Margulis, while performing operative mesenteric arteriography on a patient who presented with massive bleeding, detected a vascular malformation in the large bowel in 1960.
- The term angiodysplasia was coined by Galbadini in 1974.[2]
- The association between gastrointestinal bleeding in angiodysplasia and von Willebrand disease was first described by Ramsey et al in 1976.[3][4]
