Overview
Furazolidone is an antibiotic used to treat diarrhea and enteritis caused by bacteria or protozoan infections. It is marketed by Roberts Laboratories under the brand name Furoxone and by GlaxoSmithKline as Dependal-M.
Furazolidone is also used in combination with fluids for treatment of acute infantile diarrhea. Furazolidone is also used to treat traveler's diarrhea, cholera, and bacteremic salmonellosis.
As a veterinary medicine, furazolidone has been used with some success to treat salmonids for Myxobolus cerebralis infections. This drug is commonly prescribed to infants and children in oral suspension. The drug is the most common treatment of diarrhea caused by water borne diseases.
