Overview
Approximately 1 in every three normal adults have a patent foramen ovale.
Epidemiology and Demographics
The incidence of Patent foramen ovale has been found to be approximately 30% in different studies.
Age
- Incidence has been found to vary with age, with Patent foramen ovale (PFO) occuring with higher incidences in patients up to 30 years of age (34.3%) while it decreased in patients between 40 to 80 years of age (25.4%) and was least in patients in their 90s (20.2%). [1]
- The size has been found to increase with age, from a mean of approximately 3mm in the first decade to approximately 6 mm in the 10th decade of life. [1]
Size
- The size of patent foramen ovale might range from 1 to 19 mm. However, in most cases it has been found to vary from 1 to 10 mm in diameter. The size has been found to increase with age. [1]
Sex
- No significant difference in size and incidence based on sex was seen.
