Physical Examination

Appearance of the Patient

The patient looks sick in cases of septicemia.

Vitals

Temperature

• Elevated body temperature

Pulse

Rate

• Tachycardia may be present.

Rhythm

• Regular

Strength

• Pulse may be weak.

Blood Pressure

• Hypotension may be present.

Respiratory Rate

• Rapid, shallow respiratory rate may be present.

Skin

• Boils
• Carbuncles
• Pus in blisters - impetigo
• Small red, tender bumps - cellulitis
• Abscesses
• A rash may be present.

Eye

• Swelling i the area around the eye - stye.
• Tenderness around the eye.

Lungs

• Bronchial sounds may be heard in pneumonia.
• Rales may be present.
• Reduced lung sounds may be heard in pleural effusion.

Heart

• S1, S2 are present.
• A functional flow murmur may be present.
• Pathological murmurs may be heard when valves are involved (e.g endocarditis).

Extremities

• Joint tenderness
• Swollen joints
• Bone tenderness
