Complications
Life-long neurological defects such as deafness, emotional lability and hemiparesis may occur in those who have had central nervous system involvement.
Prognosis
- Among patients who develop encephalitis, 20% - 30% die (case-fatality ratio).
- Although some symptoms improve after the acute illness, 30%-50% of survivors continue to have neurologic, cognitive, or psychiatric symptoms. Serious neurologic sequela develops in 30% cases.
- Case fatality rates range from 0.3% to 60%.
