Overview
Constipation in adults is a common health issue which may be due to medications use like antispasmodics, anticholinergics, analgesics or may be associated with systemic disorders like diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism etc.  Idiopathic constipation is considered once when the secondary causes are ruled out and may be associated with normal or slow colonic transit, defecatory dysfunction, or both.  Constipation is a common problem throughout childhood and often resolves with age after proper guidance regarding diet, toilet training, and toileting behaviors.

Causes

Life Threatening Causes

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
