Overview
A coronary artery dissection is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome and sudden death,[1] with eighty percent of cases affecting women. The coronary artery develops a tear, causing blood to flow between the layers which forces them apart. Coronary artery dissection can be either spontaneous, and in this case it is called spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) or secondary to other conditions. The majority of dissections occur following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI); however, although rare, coronary dissections can occur spontaneously.[2]
Classification
Primary
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection
Secondary
Coronary artery dissection as a complication of PCI
