Overview

High cholesterol level can be caused by a wide variety of factors. Genetic, endocrine, and metabolic factors are the major participants in the development of high cholesterol level. Examples of common causes include diabetes mellitus, familial hypercholesterolemia, drug side effects, and kidney disease.

Causes

Life Threatening Causes

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated. High cholesterol in itself is not a life threatening condition.
