Elevated levels of D-dimers have been shown to be associated with an increased incidence of VTE in general whether idiopathic or secondary to a non-cancer cause independently of the presence of the commonly inherited coagulopathies.     • 49.1% of enrolled subjects had an elevated D-dimer level at the enrollment time, 14.2% of which developed VTE within the follow up period.
    • 5.6% of patients who had normal D-dimer developed VTE[2]
