Recommendations
The recommendations are based on the 2013 American Cancer Society (ACS) lung cancer screening guidelines, the 2013 American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) Screening for lung cancer: Diagnosis of lung cancer (third edition), the 2013 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Screening for Lung Cancer recommendation statemet and the 2012 National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Lung Cancer Screening.[1][2][3]
- Patients who smoke or quit smoking less than 15 years ago, who are between the ages of 30 and 74-80 years-old and patients with a history of 20 to 30 pack years should receive screening with low dose computed tomography (LDCT).
- Screening is not recommended for patients who don't have the characteristics mentioned above:
- Patients younger that 55 years-old or older than 74 years-old.
- Patients who smoked less than 30 pack years.
- Patients who quit smoking more than 15 years ago.
- Regular chest X-ray imaging and sputum cytology are not recommended.
