Overview
History and Symptoms
Most patients with hepatitis E, especially children with the disease, are asymptomatic. If symptoms occur, the average time is 3 to 8 weeks after exposure, with an average of 40 days. For patients with symptomatic disease, common symptoms may include:[1][2][3]
- Muscle pain
- Joint pain
- Muscle weakness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Yellowish discoloration of the eyes and skin
- Itching
- Clay-colored bowel movements
- Dark-colored urine
- Prolonged cholestasis (60% patients)
- Malaise
- Lack of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Skin rash
