Overview

This section provides a short and straight to the point overview of the disease or symptom. The first sentence of the overview must contain the name of the disease.

Causes

Life Threatening Causes

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.

Common Causes

Diagnosis

Shown below is an algorithm summarizing the diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysm according the the 2010 ACCF/AHA/AATS/ACR/ASA/SCA/SCAI/SIR/STS/SVM Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Patients With Thoracic Aortic Disease guidelines.

Identify cardinal findings that increase the pretest probability of acute aortic dissection
Identify cardinal symptoms that increase the pretest probability of abdominal aortic aneurysm

❑ Pulsating mass near the navel
❑ Abdominal pain
❑ Back pain
❑ Symptoms of clot formation and subsequent lower extremity embolism

❑ Lower extremity pain
❑ Lower extremity numbness and/or tingling
❑ Lower extremity pallor
❑ Lower extremity and coolness

❑ Risk factors

❑ Old age > years
❑ Male gender
❑ History of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
❑ History of hypertension
❑ Smoking
❑ Dyslipidemia
❑ Family history

Does the patient have the following findings which require urgent management?

❑ Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm

❑ Shock
❑ Acute abdominal pain
