Overview
Primary prevention of bronchiectasis is aimed at preventing future development by monitoring potential bronchiectasis-inducing infections, avoiding harmful substances, vaccinations, maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), and practicing physiologic strategies.
Bronchiectasis Primary Prevention
- An x-ray of the chest should be taken after any severe attack of acute respiratory infections during childhood
- Avoid toxic fumes, gases, smoke, and other harmful substances
- While smoking has not been found to be a direct cause of bronchiectasis, it can be an irritant that all patients should avoid[1]
- A healthy Body Mass Index, vaccination (especially against pneumonia and influenza), and regular doctor visits may have beneficial effects[2]
- Physiotherapy strategies==
- Airway clearance
- Postural Drainage
- Autogenic Drainage
- Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques
- Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP)
- Oscillatory PEP devices
- High-frequency chest wall percussion
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Exercise training
- Nutritional counseling
- Educationof the patient's disease and how to manage it
