WikiDoc (Internet Point-of-Care CME)

Internet point-of-care learning is a certified CME activity in which a physician engages in self-directed, online learning on topics relevant to their clinical practice. Learning for this activity includes a reflective process in which a physician must document their clinical question, the sources consulted and the application to practice.

Statement of Need

Information technology is leveling the playing field among knowledge workers. Silos of knowledge are coming down, and professionals are now sharing information more freely. WikiDoc was created to freely share medical knowledge and to foster collaboration among healthcare providers. Launched by Dr. C. Michael Gibson of Harvard Medical School in late 2005, WikiDoc is the first and largest wiki dedicated to medicine on the Internet. Today, WikiDoc is a free, open source, web-based living textbook of medicine co-created and kept up to date by an international community of over 5,000 collaborating healthcare professionals locatedthroughout the world. The content has now been updated nearly half a million times. It is WikiDoc’s goal to continue to engage and expand its community of contributors and users, to offer an editing process that delivers content that is valid, independent, free of commercial influence and bias, and based upon the latest medical knowledge, to serve as an essential resource for practitioners worldwide, and to assist clinicians at the point of care. WikiDoc receives no pharmaceutical or device industry support for the site. WikiDoc is a not-for-profit foundation (i.e. the WikiDoc Foundation), governed by a board of directors, and chaired by its founder, Dr. Gibson.

Target Audience

WikiDoc CME activities only provide AMA PRA Category 1 credits^TM, however, the content provided is geared towards all the following:

• Attending physicians, independent and group practitioners - to share and improve upon their fund of general medical knowledge, to prepare for their sub-specialty boards, to help in teaching rotating residents and medical students, • Housestaff - in preparation for morning report and as a quick reference while on the hospital wards. • Medical students - in preparation for morning rounds and for presentations, to research the conditions seen in their patients, and to prepare for their USMLE examinations using board review. • Fellows - in preparation for conferences, for teaching on the hospital wards and as preparation for specialty board exams. • Nursing and ancillary staff - to look up medical information, as well as to research management, medications, and dosing pertaining to their patients. • Patients - to learn more about their particular condition or the conditions of their family members through the WikiPatient pages.

Accreditation and Credit Designation

This activity has been planned and implemented by the Duke University Health System Department of Clinical Education and Professional Development and The WikiDoc Foundation for the advancement of patient care. The Duke University Health System Department of Clinical Education & Professional Development is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing education for the health care team.

Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
