Overview
Antimicrobial therapy is the mainstay for atypical pneumonia caused by mycoplasma. Pharmacologic therapies for mycoplasma pneumonia include either macrolides, Doxycycline, and second generation Quinolones. Supportive therapy includes either nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or Acetaminophen. Aspirin should be avoided in children.
Medical Therapy
Antimicrobial Regimen

- Preferred regimen (1): Azithromycin 500 mg PO qd on day 1 and 250 mg PO qd on days 2 to 5
- Preferred regimen (2): Clarithromycin 500 mg PO qd for 14 days
- Preferred regimen (3): Moxifloxacin 400 mg PO qd for 14 days
- Preferred regimen (4): Levofloxacin 750 mg PO qd for 14 days
- Alternative regimen : Doxycycline 100 mg PO bid for 14 days
