Cholecystitis may be also be classified into calculous and acalculous forms, depending on the cause. Other variants of cholecystitis include xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, emphysematous cholecystitis, eosinophilic and lymphoeosinophilic cholecystitis.

Cholecystitis can be classified depending upon acuity as:
- Acute cholecystitis
- Chronic cholecystitis
Cholecystitis can be classified based upon the cause as as:
- Calculous cholecystitis (58%)
- Acalculous cholecystitis (42%)[1]
Other types are:
- Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis
- Emphysematous cholecystitis
- Eosinophilic and lymphoeosinophilic cholecystitis
