Overview

Biopsy and genetic testing may be helpful in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma.[1]On bone marrow biopsy, multiple myeloma is characterized by an increase in percentage of abnormal plasma cells.[2] On genetic testing, multiple myeloma is characterized by chromosome 13 deletion and chromosome 14 translocation.[3][4][5][6]

Bone Marrow Biopsy

  • Bone marrow biopsy is usually performed to estimate the percentage of bone marrow occupied by plasma cells.[7]
  • Examination of abnormal plasma in the bone marrow is the only way to confirm a diagnosis.[8]
  • The percentage of plasma cells is also used in the diagnostic criteria of multiple myeloma.[9]

Cytogenetic tests

Karyotyping[10][11]
Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)[14][15]
