Overview
Biopsy and genetic testing may be helpful in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma.[1]On bone marrow biopsy, multiple myeloma is characterized by an increase in percentage of abnormal plasma cells.[2] On genetic testing, multiple myeloma is characterized by chromosome 13 deletion and chromosome 14 translocation.[3][4][5][6]
Bone Marrow Biopsy
- Bone marrow biopsy is usually performed to estimate the percentage of bone marrow occupied by plasma cells.[7]
- Examination of abnormal plasma in the bone marrow is the only way to confirm a diagnosis.[8]
- The percentage of plasma cells is also used in the diagnostic criteria of multiple myeloma.[9]
Cytogenetic Tests
- Karyotyping[10][11]
- Detects any chromosomal mutations occurring in multiple myeloma such as chromosome 13 deletion.[12][13]
- Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)[14][15]
- Detects any chromosomal mutations occurring in multiple myeloma such as chromosome 14 translocation.[16][17]
