* Weight loss, heat intolerance, diarrhea, insomnia, hair loss and palpitations 
Acute onset
* Ophthalmopathy
Sudden fever with sever neck pain, dysphagia, and dysphonia


* Diffusely enlarged, symmetric, nontender goiter
Sever neck tenderness, redness, and swelling
* Lid lag and exophthalmus
* Pretibial myxedema
* Moist warm skin


* Decreased TSH
Elevated WBC count
* Elevated T3 and T4
Elevated ESR
* Positive anti-TSH receptor antibodies


* Enlarged hyperechoic thyroid on U/S
Abscess may be present on U/S
* Abscence of nodularity
* homogeneously increased iodine uptake


* Plump follicular cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm
Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the most common isolated organisms
* Hyperplastic follicles with papillary epithelial infoldings
* Colloid 'scalloping' at the apical membrane
